Feeding Dreams and Communities
Approximately 3.3 million Hondurans face food insecurity according to a 2021 World Food Program report. This staggering figure represents a whopping 33% of the Honduran population. The global COVID-19 pandemic along with the 2021 Eta and Iota Hurricanes have exacerbated this reality creating an even more dire situation.
Unfortunately, the Los Pinos neighborhood is not an exception to this statistic with nearly every single family facing food insecurity on a daily basis. We often hear harrowing stories of children going several days with only one meal in their tummies or of older siblings going hungry so that their younger siblings can eat. And the national reality of Honduras is only increasing the amount of such tragic narratives in the lives of the children in our community.
As a way to further our vision of nurturing the Bodies of the children of Los Pinos, we run a community kitchen Monday through Friday where we provide nutritious meals to over one hundred children in the community. We also run a community pantry with reserves of staple food items for families that need further nutritional assistance beyond the meals provided on weekdays. Often times the meals we provide daily are the only meal that the children will have that day and providing this support makes an enormous difference in their lives.
